What We've Been Up To

Ploughing match
28th October 2011
Western Area ploughing match
The boys and girls entered a stand each. There was a very high standard this year with other stands being presented by St Buryan and Madron. This year the boys came 2nd, girls came 3rd. Well done to every-one who helped put the stands together, group effort!

Junior Public Speaking
3rd November 2011
Junior Public speaking final took place at Ladok Village hall, this year saw 3 teams take part: Liskeard, Roche & Praze. Chairman for Praze this year was Laura Badcock, Main speaker Richard Jenkin, and Vote of thanks Sophie Butcher. The team did a sterling job and came an eventual 3rd.

YFC Exchange Home leg with Eglwyswrw YFC
4th-6th November
This weekend we were joined by a YFC club from Pembrokeshire, we started with a group gathering in the Smugglers pub on Friday night, then dropped in to the Duke of Leeds pub, Leedstown to give the welsh a true taste of Cornwall with the very talented Bob Love in residence. On Saturday the hosts showed the welsh around family homes/farms, then met for lunch at Philps Pasty company. A trip to Cornwall would not be the same without a visit to Healeys Cider Farm to sample some of the local beverages & we even had a guided tour and tractor ride around the orchard. As we had some spare time we dropped by Callestick Icecream farm on route to Michael Stones farm, Carleen for a guided tour of the animals. Needless to say the welsh were not expecting to see Wallaby’s or rhia’s. We then made our way back to get ready for a night out in Penzance and meal in Bramwells Meadery. A 3 legged pub crawl made for an amusing stagger up through town. A good night was had by all. We were then very kindly invited to Splattridden & Trembetho farm for a farm visit on Sunday morning by kind permission of the Richards Family. Looking forward to the away leg in the new year

New Members Evening - 21/10/2011

The scare crow has worked it magic tempting around 30 people, including a lot of new and some slightly older, people to the new members evening held at Leedstown village hall. The club would like to thank Morwenna Kinver for running the ‘County Roadshow’ which was enjoyed by everyone. Next week’s meeting is set up for W/A ploughing match followed by the Freshers ball at sandsifter.

Julian Ellis - Farming by the Cycles of the Moon - 14/10/2011

On Fri 14th October, Julian Ellis (ex St Buryan YFC) came to talk to us about farming with the cycles of the moon, and how planting your crops and sowing fertiliser on a good moon day increases the chances of a good harvest. He also explained how it is helping his herd of cows concieve at a much better percentage than before, though this is probably due to the bull seeing what he's doing better in full moon light!! 25 members thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Chairmans Surprise Evening - 7/10/2011

Friday night saw the ‘chairmans surprise’ organised by Lucy Williams. It was a bit of a shock for my car load and I to walk into Leedstown village hall to find fellow members walking around in a figure of 8 to music which can only be described as ‘before my time’. It was then that I noticed Penny Ellis and then things started to make sense. A night of ballroom dancing in preparation for the up and coming dinner and dance was enjoyed by all, although some found it a little trickier than others.
